Wix or WordPress: which is better for a small business?
An honest comparison of the two most popular ways to build a small business website, and when each one makes sense.
Wix and WordPress are the two names most small businesses hear when they look for a website. Both can work well. The right one depends on who will build and look after the site.
Wix in short
- Easy to start. Drag-and-drop editor, hosting included.
- Monthly subscription. You pay Wix every month for as long as you have the site.
- Locked in. There is no simple way to move a Wix site to another host. If you leave, you usually rebuild.
- Good enough for simple sites if you have time to build and update it yourself.
WordPress in short
- Used by a large share of all websites, so help and plugins are easy to find.
- You own it. You can move your site to another host or another web designer at any time.
- Flexible. Booking systems, forms, shops and SEO tools can all be added.
- Needs looking after. Updates, security and backups need doing, which is why many businesses have a web designer manage it.
Which is better for Google?
Both can rank well. What matters more is the content: clear pages for your services and areas, fast loading, and a Google Business Profile. WordPress gives you more control over the technical details if you need them.
Our view
If you want to build it yourself and keep it simple, Wix is fine. If you want someone to build and look after a site that you own and can take anywhere, WordPress is usually the better choice. That is why we build on WordPress.
